New Haven now home to new MakeHaven

(6/11/2013) New Haven Register - A 3-D printer hummed in the background as city employees, residents and innovators celebrated the relaunch of MakeHaven, the city’s first “hacker space.”

A “Hacker space” is a community-oriented area where creators and builders can convene, build and share ideas. These spaces have become increasingly popular in growing cities across the country, according to MakeHaven President Marcus Notz.

Notz and other hackers began convening more than a year ago after they recognized the need for a hacker space in the city. The group quickly garnered the city’s support and attention as a key component to the city’s innovation hub.

“We’ve been trying to lead this effort of building this creative, innovative space where entrepreneurs can grow… and this was another component of that,” said Kelly Murphy, city Economic Development administrator.

With the help of the city, MakeHaven occupied the 2,000-square-foot space at 266 State St. in the Ninth District last year—but that was just the beginning.
